My name is Samuel. A 42-year-old Civil engineer. I was diagnosed with diabetes in 2016. The suspicions arose when I started to lose weight. In fact, I lost a lot of weight, dropping from about 100 kilos to 70. At the time, we had a lot of projects to complete at work.
But it got to the point where I couldn’t go an hour without needing the toilet and I was drinking around six or seven litres of water a day – the thirst really was unbelievable. At the same time, I kept developing thrush and was generally exhausted.
After a few weeks, I became very worried as the symptoms became severe, I didn’t begin to consider there might be another cause until my wife suggested I visit the doctor.
As my test results came back, it was determined that I had type 2 diabetes. The only support I received was being told to take metformin and being given some booklets with additional information.
I can recall his exact words still ringing in my head. He said, ‘’You can’t escape it. You have diabetes but it is not death sentence, if you don’t follow the rules, you’ll have maybe 7 years to live. But if you manage it properly—with diet, exercise and medication—you can live a long, healthy life’’.
When I received my diagnosis, I was reminded of my big sister, who was ill when I was a young child. She had a leg boil that never seemed to go away, and she was continuously exhausted.
I didn’t begin to suspect that she might have had diabetes until I learned more about its symptoms.
We never discovered the answer because she fell into a coma and passed away at age 65. Nonetheless, it made me realise how crucial it would be to control my situation.
The challenges may have even gotten worse since my diagnosis. Most of the food we eat in Nigeria contains high starch content, so I knew I would have to make some changes there.
My wife and I learnt how to cook dishes in a different way, to make them healthier for me and my family. I also stop eating sweets, even adding sugar to my tea. This was really hard for the kids as most of the meals they love was not prepared as much as before.
For a while, these changes – alongside the tablets – seemed to be working. It was about 2 years after my diagnosis when my doctor noticed that I wasn’t responding to the Metformin as well anymore.

I buried my emotions and believed I could handle it. I reassured myself that it would only take a few insulin injections before I become used to it. At first, I was worried about having to inject myself. But, like everything, you get used to it after a while.

I thought I was dying. The sound of my kids crying and calling my name was the saddest part of that night.
Long story short, I landed in the emergency room. I don’t really remember what happened. I only remember a nurse struggling to put in an IV line.
My Haemoglobin A1c was a whopping 14% – A situation likened to been listed top 3 on death row!
